“Remember that in addition to learning science and math and English,” I said to one of Kelly’s students, “we’re also learning about ourselves. More than just the course work, we’re also learning how to improve ourselves, and learning why we should improve, a lifelong process. We may not understand right now why exactly we need to know algebra, but the process of learning algebra helps us learn the process of all self-improvement. It helps us think differently. It helps us become more than we were. And at some point we think, well, if I can learn algebra, I can learn anything. If I can aspire to a 4.0, I can aspire to a high paying job. I can aspire to a successful career of my own choosing. I can aspire to a happy family life, a prosperous professional life, and better still, an abundant lifestyle. And I can inspire others to do the same.”
